A few years ago, if someone said to me that women had voted a hair styling tool the best invention ever, I would have probably laughed at them. As a woman, I’m well aware of the importance of hair straighteners, I use them daily, as without them my hair would be a complete mess (unfortunately I am not blessed with ‘wash and go’ hair)!

Over the past few years the popularity of hair straighteners has grown at an extremely rapid rate, so much so that in December 2007, women voted hair straighteners the greatest invention ever. They topped a poll with 27% of the vote; the mobile phone came in second place, followed by the laptop computer, the hairdryer and the TV remote control which came in fifth.

I, like many others religiously straighten my hair, but I’ve got to admit, I was pretty shocked to see that most women see hair straighteners as more essential than mobile phones, who would have thought it! I think I would definitely struggle to choose between the two!

Such a poll demonstrates the extent to which hair straighteners have revolutionised the hair industry and lives of women in the UK.
