Over the last 5-10 years hair straighteners have quickly become a common household appliance and it is important to remember that hair straighteners are electrical devices therefore caution should be taken when using them. Please take note of the following information that will aid you in using your hair straighteners in a safe and sensible manner.

Some hair straighteners can heat up to over 200 degrees and so if they are not used carefully such high temperatures could cause severe burns to your face, fingers, scalp and even hair. Never set the temperature higher than necessary to achieve the desired result as too high a temperature may burn or even damage your hair within a short period of time. Make sure you hold the hair straightener by the designated handle and never try to pick it up by the plates. Even if you think the straightener is turned off, be sure to treat it as if it were on. As straighteners are electrical devices it is important to keep them away from any dampness. Store them in a cool, dry area and also out of the reach of any child or animal that may come to harm.

If you tend to get ready in the bathroom be extra cautious to stay away from the bath tub, running shower, and sink while using the hair straightener as you could experience an electric shock if the straightener comes into contact with water. Try to have power outlets away from a water supply, so you do not place yourself in a dangerous situation. If possible do not use them in the bathroom or anywhere near a water supply.

Once switched off, hair straighteners will remain extremely hot for quite some time. It is best to allow them to cool naturally on an appropriate surface away from any papers, plastics, towels or wooden surfaces that may be damaged.The hot temperatures of the plates, even whilst turned off and cooling down, could spark a fire or melt through certain fabrics. It is possible to purchase a heat mat, they are specifically designed to withstand the heat of a hair straightener and protect any surface on which they are placed.
